In a proof of concept project for the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the municipality of The Hague we developed an application that helps city officials to identify relevant neighborhoods in municipalities that have successfully improved on one of several safety indicators.
Local policy makers are often unaware of the successful safety policies implemented in neighborhoods of municipalities other than their own. Our application shows an interactive map of The Hague in which neighborhoods can be selected. Based on open data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) an algorithm finds neighborhoods in other Dutch municipalities with comparable features to the selected neighborhood in The Hague.
For each neighborhood several safety indicator values can be visualized over time, such as the number of burglaries, threats, bike thefts or acts of vandalism. The application can be easily extended to accommodate other types of indicator data.
