Qualogy’s Suriname connection: offshoring without (big) cultural gap

In cooperation with Qualogy – The Netherlands is facing a persistent IT shortage. Asia seems logical, but brings cultural problems. Eastern Europe, on the other hand, is becoming increasingly expensive. Qualogy founder Paul Mehilal found a third way: Suriname. ‘For us, it’s all about building and transferring knowledge. We have become a breeding ground for talent’.

In 2002, Qualogy founder Paul Mehilal had a mission: to explore exactly what was possible in terms of digitization in Suriname. ‘Our big customers during the financial crisis were mainly looking at cost savings and went offshoring to Asia en masse,’ he recalls. ‘But what they got back was a huge cultural difference, language problems and quality that was often not good enough.’

From crisis to opportunity

By necessity, the idea had to be “put on ice” for several years, as Mehilal puts it. But in 2007, with a new financial crisis looming, the time was ripe. The plan was simple but bold: turn mathematicians into IT professionals.

‘We started with interviews of science students – physics, chemistry and a math background,’ Mehilal says. ‘And the level immediately surprised us. For months, Qualogy trainers flew between the Netherlands and Suriname to train class by class. It was a big deal, but the transformation from mathematician to IT person went better than expected.’

‘This set-up ensures that Dutch customers have the quality assurance and communication they are used to, combined with the cost advantages of offshore development – but without the language and culture gap that it usually entails.’
